In-Line, by artists James Voller and Joel Zika, was created using technology inspired by “hawk eye” and sports visualisations commonly seen in cricket and other sports broadcasts. Using community data taken from members of local sports teams, the artists created digital realisations of the data and translated it into three dimensional sculptures. It takes the functionality of the sport and translates that into a physical representation, providing an abstract, interactive artwork for the many visitors to Fairpark Reserve.

By blurring the boundaries between art and sport, it creates an immersive experience that encourages exploration and play, promoting healthy communities and creating a sense of connection, joy, and physical activity. The work is one of the first of its kind, taking statistics from the digital realm and transforming them into the physical environment of Knox’s new sporting hub.

The creation of In-Line involved a highly collaborative process, working closely with Knox City Council, Urban Art Projects (UAP), and expert fabricators to ensure the artwork’s success. The digital forms created by Joel and James were meticulously translated into three-dimensional sculptures through our partnership with UAP, as well as skilled fabricators who brought the intricate designs to life.

Collaboration with the council ensured the artwork aligned with the community’s needs and the site’s broader vision, resulting in a dynamic, interactive installation at Fairpark Reserve that celebrates the intersection of art, sport, and community engagement.
