Inflatable Anything
Threshold was a large-scale temporary light sculpture created for the un[contained] Festival, an annual outdoor arts event in Kogarah, Sydney, celebrating immersive experiences, performance and food culture. The work invited audiences to move through and around an illuminated inflatable archway, where light and motion responded directly to their presence.
Conceived in collaboration with Laura Alice, a Geelong-based artist and creative director known for her socially engaged and technologically ambitious practice, Threshold transformed a public thoroughfare into an interactive zone of connection and sensory play. The installation combined soft architectural forms with real-time responsive projection, acting as both a physical and digital canvas.
Using motion-sensing technology, the work reacted to the bodies passing through and beside it. Pulsing lines of light traced the energy of the crowd, with shifting patterns rippling across the archway’s inflatable surface. The result was a constantly evolving visual field shaped by collective movement—an artwork animated by those who encountered it.
Collide Public Art led the fabrication and delivery of the project, working closely with council, festival organisers and Laura Alice to bring the work to life. From design development and technical resolution to on-site coordination and installation, Collide ensured that the piece integrated safely and seamlessly into the festival environment.
At its core, Threshold offered a moment of shared wonder, where people, light and form came together in a temporary choreography of place.
